At Campus Contern, taking action is our fundamental sustainable principle.

Discover how we have pioneered sustainable construction in Luxembourg:

  • Footprint: Luxembourg’s first BREEAM Excellent certified buildings
  • Efficiency: Smart buildings with optimized natural heat management
  • Health: Innovative natural air purification
  • Mobility: Over 115 electric vehicle charging stations and multiple free soft mobility services
  • Commitment: First office building to receive Scope 3 carbon neutral certification, renewed CSR certification…

“We have always had a dual objective: to minimize our ecological footprint and maximize the comfort of our tenants.” says Marc Diver, CEO “Our actions are not limited to words, but translate into continuous improvements and concrete innovations.”

Our action is both an enhancement of the property, an asset for retaining our tenants, and a source of constant optimization.

Since every action stems from a reason: why act?

Luxembourg is second in overshoot day, shortly after Qatar! As early as February 17th, it’s a truly alarming position.

Carbon Footprint in Luxembourg

Luxembourg has one of the highest per capita carbon footprints in the world. In 2020, the per capita carbon footprint was estimated at 18.7 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2eq), a slight decrease compared to 21.1 tonnes in 20102. However, this value remains well above the European Union average.

In 2022, Luxembourg had the highest per capita greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the EU-27, with approximately 14.5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per person, nearly double the EU-27 average3.

>> It is for this reason that we sought to obtain Scope 3 Carbon Neutral certification: construction is one of the biggest contributors, and action was needed.

Objectives and Challenges

The country has set ambitious targets to reduce its GHG emissions, including a 55% reduction by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. However, achieving these objectives requires significant changes in lifestyles and land use planning4.

>> This is also the goal of our overall CSR and Carbon Neutral approach: to change consumption behaviors to do as well or even better with less energy or resources.

Contributing Sectors

The main sectors contributing to this carbon footprint are transport, the energy industry, manufacturing industries, and construction. For example, the building sector contributes approximately 3 tonnes of CO2 per person per year, partly due to the large living spaces in Luxembourgish housing compared to other European countries4.

>> The office sector is also significant with almost 5 million m2 in Luxembourg; Campus Contern and its 16,000 m2 must do its part.

Awareness and Actions

To raise citizen awareness and encourage action, the Luxembourg government has launched online tools like myImpact.lu, which allows everyone to calculate their personal carbon footprint and compare their results to the national average. This tool aims to encourage more responsible consumption patterns56.

>> At our ‘corporate’ level, we share our initiatives, best practices, and certificates with our tenants: our goal is to make it easier for them to obtain their own certification and help them qualify for demanding tenders regarding the impact of their activities.

These figures highlight the urgency of acting to reduce Luxembourg’s carbon footprint. Initiatives like those at Campus Contern, which aim to minimize the ecological footprint while maximizing occupant comfort, are crucial for achieving national sustainability goals.

We invite you to do the same; contact us if you would like information, feedback, etc. We would be delighted to discuss the matter.

Together, let’s build a better future! 🌳🏢
