Campus Contern has become the first office complex in Luxembourg to obtain a ‘CO2 neutral’ label.
It’s a great reward for our continuous efforts since the project’s inception in 2007. Our business is to offer you ergonomic, pleasant, modern, and easy-to-live-in office spaces for rent: our #feelgoodatwork.
But it’s also a commitment to action because the goal is crucial, the task enormous, and the outcome vital: we must all act to correct our climate mistakes.
Talking VS Acting
Talking is good, very useful, because mass awareness is essential. However, it’s actions, no matter how small, that will count. Everyone, to their extent, according to their means, can act, and we are very proud to have obtained this CO2 neutral label, well before the 2030 deadline, because we were ready and committed.
Every action counts
Since the beginning of the construction of our 5 office buildings in Contern, we have optimized everything to reduce our footprint:
- The first to obtain the BREEAM Excellent label in Luxembourg (and even today, only 8% of buildings hold a green label of this type) with QBuild and PWC
- Among the first to promote soft mobility even though we have one of the highest parking ratios in Luxembourg:
- The first to test an autonomous electric shuttle to connect Sandweiler Contern station and our offices (the famous last 900m that discourage taking public transport) with the Municipality of Contern and Sales Lentz
- The first to install 67 electric vehicle charging stations. At the time, we had no demand, so we had to make the chicken-and-egg choice: do we wait for demand to act, or do we act to stimulate demand? Obviously, we chose action! In the first year, we rented about ten, and this year almost all of them are in use, and we are working on adding more to satisfy our tenants.
- The first (just barely) to have an on-site shared car to facilitate travel or unexpected needs for people using public transport or carpooling with Moovee
- Among the first to install solar panels and to closely monitor legislative developments to add more
- Among the first to consider hydrogen plants … a project on legislative standby that should resume soon
- Among the first to recycle cigarette butts with Shime
- The first to install a natural ecosystem in the building to purify the air, sanitize HVAC systems, and clean without chemicals or water with Indoor Forest
- And then there are all the other actions everyone also takes:
- Maximize recycling and minimize waste
- Optimize lighting and faucets
- Digitize billing, signage, certain services to provide maximum comfort and service while limiting our footprint
- Promote biodiversity
- Offer free fitness classes
- Obtain the CSR label
- Etc.
Some of these actions were simple, others a technical challenge, others an investment, but the result is clear: our buildings range from 2008 for the first to 2019 for the most recent, but they are carbon neutral and smart to maximize occupant comfort and minimize operating costs for us and our tenants.
